The Nicholas U. Mayall Telescope, also known as the Mayall 4-meter Telescope, is a four-meter (158 inches) reflector telescope located at the Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona and named after Nicholas U. Mayall.It saw first light on February 27, 1973, and was the second-largest telescope in the world at that time. It was commissioned in 1973 and it is nearly identical to the 4-meter Blanco Telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile, also operated by NSF’s OIR Lab and commissioned in 1976. The mountain is usually climbed from early May until mid-November, but is a very common winter climb as well.
